Texas Independent Insurance Agent: Losing Life Insurance Benefits
Recently, very close family member lost their job. She had been working faithfully for her employer for over a decade. Therefore, she became very comfortable with her skill set and benefits that were provided by the company. Unfortunately because she was so comfortable, she never tried to increase her value to the company by learning new things or undertaking additional responsibilities. But what she did, she did well.
Years ago, I urged her to purchase a life insurance policy. Her answer to me (which I have heard many times over) was " I have life insurance through my job". Well unless you are a hermit, many of you realize there have been a large number of Americans that are now without jobs. At this point and time, you have to be just thankful to be employed when at one time you may have had your pick of jobs that were available.
We hear on the news daily about company layoffs, or furloughs similar to what has been proposed for law enforcement agencies and fire departments throughout the city of Dallas. There used to be a time that you could visualize working for a company until you reached retirement age - those days are days of the past.
That's why it is very important not to solely depend on your employer for all of your benefits. Sure health insurance and life insurance may be cheaper because there are more people to spread the risk, which in turn, results in a lower premium. But for the reasons mentioned, do not depend on your employer for your Texas life insurance policy.
If you loose your job; you loose your benefits, as well. Now think about the lady that I referred to earlier, she is now a decade older. What this means is that she purchase an insurance policy now, her premium would reflect the cost to insure someone at her present age. If she had purchased even a smaller life insurance policy years ago, she would be okay ( as far as life insurance is concerned).
Since she is a close family member, lucky for her (really lucky for her family), I purchased a life insurance policy for her when I knew that she would not. The thing about life insurance is that not having it does not hurt the person that is to be insured - it affects the family members that must come together and donate money that they may not have, so that the deceased can have a proper burial.
Do not place this burden on your family. Make the sacrifice and purchase that Texas life insurance policy today. And please don't wait until tomorrow because tomorrow is never promised to us.
